Let’s start with how beautiful everything is. You would be hard pressed to find a more idyllic setting. Located at the northern end of the Moreno Valley, the town of Eagle Nest is surrounded by the Sangre De Christo mountains and of course the 3,000 acre Eagle Nest lake. Eagle Nest supposedly received its name when the dam was built and Eagles started building their nests on the side of the dam.
The lake itself is a high altitude cold water lake that offers great fishing opportunities with multiple species of fish including Kokanee Salmon and Rainbow Trout. You can fish from a boat in the summer or even ice fish in the winter when the lake freezes over. Additional fishing opportunities are available on the Cimarron River which runs between Eagle Nest and Cimarron.
Wildlife viewing is plentiful throughout the valley, it is not uncommon to view herds of elk numbering 200 to 300 hundred at a time. Your best chance of seeing Elk is early morning or late afternoon near Angel Fire on the southern end of the valley or north of Elizabethtown on hwy 38 north of Eagle Nest. Other activities include skiing and downhill mountain biking at nearby Angel Fire Resort. Camping, snowmobiling, nature photography and more are also all within reach.
Eagle Nest is conveniently located near other popular destinations in New Mexico, such as Taos and Red River, offering a chance to explore more of the state's cultural and natural attractions.
